SPEAKER: Richard Danson, M.D., gave a presentation on his recent trip to Italy and his tour of the Italian Amalfi Coast and Capri, Italy’s Horticulture Coast. This is a stretch of coastline along the southern edge of the Salerno Gulf in the Province of Salerno

The Amalfi Coast is a World Heritage Site and is about an hours drive south of Naples.
The doctor showed us a video presentation. Included were some Renaissance paintings, such as artist Botticeli. Many have garden backgrounds.

Their first garden trip was on SS163 which follows the coastline , full of curves, between the rocks and the sea cliffs. One of his pictures showed a tour bus coming down and cars going up. We would call it a traffic “nightmare”. The road is considered one of the most beautiful roads in Italy. The gardens are 1,000 years old and have many geometric designs.

|
Their hotel in Ravello, called Villa Rufolo, had lush gardens and rows of statues which are popular in European gardens. The building is a 1,000 years old.
Next stop; Isle of Capri, which is reached by ferry from Naples or by air. The main town is called Capri, a resort town since the Roman Republic,
Capri is home to the famous site, The Blue Grotto. It was discovered in the 19th century.
Their hotel in Capri was originally an Iberian castle. Again the gardens were lush, pictures of thick beds of geraniums and pansies.
